What is Yoga?
Yoga is a holistic system intended to purify the mind, body and spirit. The most popular form of yoga in the West is called Hatha Yoga which is primarily a practice of poses (called Asanas in sanskrit), breath work (Pranayama), and meditation (Dyana). But, there is much more to yoga; there are actually five more branches of yoga which create the classic eight branches enumurated by the great sage, Pantanjali. They are: Yama (universal laws, Niyama (self purification/discipline), Pratahara (withdrawal of the mind/domination of the senses), Dhrana (concentration), and Samadhi (enlightenment). It is through the holistic, ongoing practice of yoga (Hatha or not) that we experience an incredible sense of well-being, self-realization and a blissful connection to the community.

"The signs of progress on the path of Yoga are health, a sense of physical lightness, steadiness, clearness of countenance, a beautiful voice, sweetness of odour of the body and freedom from craving. The yogi has a balanced, serene, tranquil mind. A yogi is the very symbol of humility. He/She dedicates all actions to a higher source and takes refuge in it. This frees the yogi from the bondage of karma (action) and moves him/her to Jivana Mukta (a Liberated Soul)"

At the Brentwood Yoga Center we believe in community. We provide safe, educational, fun yoga to all ages, body shapes, and abilities. We believe that practicing together as a community creates a supportive atmosphere in which each student is supported and nurtured in order to grow and develop at their own pace. We encourage questions and comments from students to help us provide a better understanding of yoga and all its benefits.

What does Namaste mean?
Namaste:
I honor the place in you in which the entire universe dwells.
I honor the place in you which is of love, of truth, of light and of peace.
When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are ONE.
